School Manager vs Instructional Leader

A principal plays a major role in the success of a school as both a school manager and an instructional leader. While the two concepts seem similar, there are major distinctions between the two that are important for any school principal to understand.

A principal as a school manager is primarily responsible for the administrative aspects of school operation and functioning. The main duties of a school manager include setting and enforcing standards, overseeing staff and faculty, mediating conflict, monitoring and managing school budgets, and ensuring compliance with school policies and procedures. In this capacity, a principal acts as the face of the school and its top leader often assuming strategic and operational roles.

In contrast, a principal as an instructional leader focuses on refining and improving the educational experience of students and teachers. The main duties of an instructional leader include developing and implementing a school improvement plan, working with teachers to implement organization-wide curricula, promoting learning opportunities and activities that foster critical thinking, and building a positive school climate. An instructional leader also serves as an advocate for students, parents and the community by engaging them in the decision-making process.

In conclusion, it is essential for a school principal to refine both skills in order to be successful in their role. By understanding the differences between being a school manager and an instructional leader, a principal can effectively create a school culture that encourages growth and achievement.
